Condition Monitoring (CM)
Condition Monitoring in simple words is monitoring condition of health of different parts, those are probable to fail of a asset. Today, the concern people doing CM has many misconceptions about CM and whatever CM in practice today is not actually a CM.
Condition Monitoring does not tell us about fault, but it gives only indication that the condition is going good or bad. These indications are derived from CM Trend Analysis. CM Trend Analysis is a Trend drawn of the values of the parameters under CM at different intervals over a period. If there is NO TREND, the CM is NOT DONE.
People misunderstand Condition Assessment (CAss) as Condition Monitoring. Condition Assessment does not followed by trend analysis but CM does. For example, CM of Electric Panels is can be done but CAss of Electric Panels or Compressed Air Lines can be done. Just because, in these cases we have to check whether fault like ‘Contact Resistance’ or ‘Compressed Air Leak’ is there or not. Unlike in CM, we are not checking gradually increasing parameters like temperature or ultrasound or vibration here. Unlike in CM, we are not comparing previous readings with present readings here. Wherever the trend of readings can’t be drawn, it is CAss and not CM.
CM of Asset is again misconception. It is CM of Parts of Asset. We need to monitor condition of different parts of the asset. The CM is done with different tools of CM, viz. Vibration Measurement, Ultrasound Measurement, Thermography, Oil Analysis, Current Measurement, Pressure Measurement and then presenting the readings in TREND.
