Vibration Analysis – All though it is well known, there are many misconceptions about Vibration Analysis. Just because the vibration analyst shows Spectrum (FFT) as vibration analysis, it doesn’t mean that they carried out VA in reality. It is normally used as a technique for Condition Monitoring but in reality its not a better technique for condition monitoring. Actually it’s a technique for Root Cause Analysis. While monitoring condition of hundred of assets we have limited time & vibration analysis need a lot of time to analyse. There are new techniques like Ultrasound, can be better as a CM technique. Whereas Vibration Measurement is an important technique of Condition Monitoring & not Vibration Analysis.

The Vibration Analysis means not only Spectrum (FFT) Analysis but Time Waveform Analysis, Vibration Phase Analysis, Run Up & Cost Down Tests, Cross Channel Phase Analysis, Frequency Response Function Analysis (FRF), Orbit Analysis, Octave Analysis, Cepstrum Analysis, and study of plots like Bode Plot, Nyquist Plot, Cascade Plot, Polar Plot etc.

Vibration Analysis doesn’t mean all of this analysis but to select correct analysis function as per the situation. With the vivid analysis functions, Vibration Analysis becomes an important technique of Root Cause Analysis & as well of Condition Assessment of Asset.
