Condition Assessment of Transformers
Major Transformer Failures Causes includes Insufficient Level of Oil in Tank, Contact Resistances (Maybe due to loose connection) at joints inside the tank (Winding – Insulator connections) or outside the tank (Insulator – cable connections), Arcing at HT side connections, Tracking in HT insulators & corona formation.
Condition Assessment of transformer is done to detect, the oil level in the tank, Contact resistances at all the HT/LT- Inside/outside Tank joints, Clogged Cooling Radiator Fins and faults like Arcing, tracking & Corona.
The techniques used for CAss of transformer are Ultrasound Assessment & Thermography.
Failure of Transformer causes not only the heavy transformer repair cost but the company suffers with huge production losses, down time. Hence, CAss of transformer is an essential task in PdM program.
As these transformers are outdoor equipment, Condition Assessment of Transformers is done at early morning hours with sunrise or 1 hour after sunset & Can be done from safe distance.
