Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and Condition Based Monitoring

Condition Based Maintenance – Unlike Preventive Maintenance (PM), Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) is the maintenance strategy based on the condition of the equipment. Condition Based Maintenance is also called Predictive Maintenance (PdM) as the maintenance is based on the predictions on equipment conditions and as both CBM & PdM are based on Condition Monitoring (CM). Rather CBM or PdM is the 3rd revolution in Maintenance, whereas Preventive Maintenance was the 2nd revolution of maintenance.

Condition Based Monitoring – Now let us find out the meaning of ‘Condition Based Monitoring’. If we think logically, these words ‘condition based monitoring’ has no meaning at all rather it is creating a lot of confusion. How can one monitor a condition based on condition? Isn’t it confusing? Monitoring Condition is Condition Monitoring (CM) but Monitoring based on the condition has literary no meaning at all. The correct & popular wording is ‘Condition Monitoring’ whileCondition Based monitoring’ is wrong wording, hence, it has to be removed from the dictionary of words related to maintenance & from all books of maintenance. Some people consider Condition Based Monitoring means Real-time or Online Monitoring, which is literary not pertinent at all. Condition Based Monitoring is a meaningless word itself.  We have to use the word ‘Condition Monitoring‘ and instead of  ‘Condition Based Monitoring’.

Condition Monitoring – It is basically monitoring the condition of components of the equipment. It is of two types, Manual & Real-Time, whereas Manual is part of Predictive Maintenance i.e. Maintenance 3.0 & Real-Time is part of prescriptive maintenance i.e. Maintenance 4.0. The component of any equipment that fails & not the equipment itself. If the condition of the component deteriorates, it fails due to fatigue, hence, monitoring the condition of the component periodically and keep the record in Trend format is necessary. If there is no Trend there is no Condition Monitoring. Keeping & Monitoring trend is an important part of condition monitoring.
